When looking for a part time student job, you need to find jobs that will provide flexible or alternative work schedules. As a high school student, your time for work will typically be limited to afternoons and evenings, and weekends. College part time jobs could include working during the days when you don't have classes scheduled. Of course, you'll have to leave time for studying too, along with socializing and other non-school-related activities.

Make sure your employer understands that you only have a limited number of hours you can work. Sometimes employers like to offer their part time employees the opportunity to work extra hours to make more money. This is great for making extra money, but can also cut into the time that you had planned for studying and other activities.  Remember, there are only a certain number of hours in the week, and you've got to fit sleeping in there somewhere too! As part of getting a student job, you'll probably have to go through some form of interview. You should present a business-like posture and appearance when you apply for or interview for a job or internship. In the interview, you should be prepared to explain why you want the job, what qualifications you have that will allow you to perform this job well, and how much time you would like to work. Employers may ask you about previous work experience and what skills you have that will enable you to perform their job successfully.

Even if you don't have any previous work experience you should put together a resume and/or cover letter. A resume typically shows your past work experience, but can also contain information about projects you worked on, or groups that you served on, or any activities where you had held a position of responsibility. Get a resume and cover letter package that gets you hired! Research and find out about the job you are applying for, and be prepared to not only explain why you want this job, but show examples of times that you've demonstrated responsibility and skills that would apply to the job you're seeking. A part time student job is also a great way to start building up your resume and explore different careers that interest you.  When you graduate, you may need a part time job to help pay off the bills until you can land that job that you've been studying for all these years.  Having a previous student job and positive working relationship with an employer will make it easier to go back for another part time job, or even a full time job once you graduate.
